Prerequisites and performance requirements
Successful performance in this course builds on prior knowledge and skills gained from the courses such as methodology of teaching Ukrainian, pedagogy, psychology, Ukrainian language, and introduction to linguistics. Students are also required to be aware of the theoretical background of modern Ukrainian; the general theory of language evolution and functioning; approaches, methods, techniques, and means of teaching Ukrainian. Students are expected to implement Ukrainian language learning technologies, assess students’ knowledge, skills, and abilities; analyze sources on the problems of learning Ukrainian as a foreign language, and draw up lesson plans. The course prerequisites also emphasize basic skills to apply language teaching techniques, as well as diagnostics of the quality of knowledge, skills, and abilities.
Course content
Course Description
The discipline is an elective targeted at building students' competence in teaching Ukrainian to national minority learners in secondary schools of Ukraine. The course considers the language situation in Ukraine, the subject matter, objectives, and major aspects of teaching Ukrainian to the schoolers who are non-native speakers of Ukrainian. The course is divided into 2 content modules. Module 1 studies theoretical aspects of teaching Ukrainian in national minority schools, with the focus placed on teaching various aspects of the language: pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Module 2 focuses on teaching reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The course ends with a pass/fail test.

The course is delivered through a combination of lectures, practical sessions, and project-based and independent learning. Major activities performed by the students include designing a lesson plan fragment, a group/individual project, the presentation of the designed set of tasks and exercises, the presentation of the designed lesson, and an end-of-course assignment. A student can score a maximum of 100 points and a minimum of 60 points for these activities that are components of formative assessment. Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment
A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system, a pass/fail assessment score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 100, min. 60 points) and does not involve any additional assessment events. The end-of-course assessment score is the sum of points earned for designing a lesson plan fragment (20 points), group/individual project (16 points), the presentation of the designed set of tasks and exercises (20 points), the presentation of the designed lesson (20 points), and an end-of-course assignment (24 points). To succeed in the pass/fail assessment, students are required to gain a passing grade of 60; students fail if the score is below 60.
