Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites and performance requirements Students are expected to be proficient in English at a level not lower than B2, and have knowledge of objectives, approaches, methods and techniques, tools, formats of organization of teaching/learning of a foreign language; formats, methods, and tools of evaluating students' achievements in a foreign language, psychological features of learners; be able to effectively plan and implement teaching an FL process in secondary school in compliance with the objectives and conditions of instruction; to use modern methods and techniques of teaching an FL, methods of assessing students’ knowledge and skills in an FL; to select language material, methods and techniques of teaching an FL; develop lesson plans. Interdisciplinary links: A foreign language (English), methods of teaching foreign languages.
Course content
Course Description: The practicum aims to build student teachers’ skills in planning, organization, implementation, and management of the teaching/learning of a foreign (English) language in secondary school, and of performing the functional duties of a foreign language teacher in secondary school. The practicum spans four weeks. Practicum settings are offered each year based on the agreement signed by the secondary educational establishment and the university. Students are engaged full time. Summative assessment is a pass/fail credit with scores.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The major activities that engage students and provide evidence for assessment are Observation and analysis of classes conducted by school teachers, observation of the classes of fellow trainees, conducting trial and demonstration classes, designing lesson plans for demonstration classes, use of own innovative techniques, designing a syllabus (for the period of the practicum), communication with participants in teaching/learning process, a report on the teaching practicum. A student can earn max. 100 and min. 60 points. A detailed account of all criteria to assess teaching/learning activities in the course is presented in the course curriculum made public on the website of Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading scheme. It is composed of the scores earned for each activity performed during the practicum (max. 100 and min. 60 points): a written analysis of the observed classes of school teachers (10 points), a written analysis of the observed classes of fellow trainees (10 points), trial classes (30 points), demonstration classes (10 points), extended lesson plans of demonstration classes (10 points), use of own innovative techniques (20 points), design of a syllabus (for the period of the practicum) (5 points), communication with participants in teaching/learning process (10 points), a report on the teaching practicum (5 points).
