Prerequisites and performance requirements To successfully complete the course, students are expected to have prior knowledge of specific objectives of language pedagogy as a science and its branches, particularities of pedagogical discourse, levels (paradigms) of Ukrainian and English; be able to design instruction in curricula, plans, textbooks; use a variety of teaching methods and techniques relevant to the speech activity developed; construct sets of exercises/tasks to enable students’ mastering various topics of the school curriculum in Ukrainian and English; develop lesson plans stimulating learners’ motivation; have communication skills in Ukrainian and English in the genres of pedagogical discourse.

Course description The course aims to equip students with knowledge of the conceptual foundation of language pedagogy in basic secondary school, concepts of modern language education and trends of its reformation, methodology, and categories of language pedagogy relevant for teaching oral and written speech and based on communicative and competence-based approaches; provide students with first-hand experience of teaching writing, oral monologic and dialogic speech in compliance with the Ukrainian normative acts and school curricula. The course is comprised of two modules focused on the development of oral and written speech in basic secondary school. The course ends in a pass/fail credit.

Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course combines such formats of instruction as: lectures and practical sessions, independent and project work, and problem-based learning. The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions, team project work, comments on and suggestions for the development of lesson plans. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum posted on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.

Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. The total score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 100, min. 60 points). The formative assessment considers answers at practical sessions (25 points), team projects (40 points), comments on and suggestions for the presented lesson plans (35 points). Pass/fail credit is granted based on the outcomes of the coursework during the term and does not involve any additional assessment events. To succeed in the pass/fail assessment, students are required to gain a passing grade of 60; students fail if the score is below 60.
