Programme Learning Outcomes PLO 5. Make use of major professional concepts and appropriate terminology. PLO 13. Know modern philological and pedagogical foundations of teaching Ukrainian language and literature, language norms, the socio-cultural development of the Ukrainian language, the use of language units in a certain context, language discourse of fiction and modernity, leading trends in the development of the literary process in Ukraine. PLO 14. Explain the particularities of the development of the Ukrainian language and literature, the specifics and cultural context of the Ukrainian literary process, the concepts of aesthetic theories, methods, trends, styles, and genres; Ukrainian classic and modern literature in relation to the world literature and culture; compare linguistic and literary facts and phenomena, identify their similarities and differences. Prerequisites and co-requisites
Prerequisites and performance requirements Successful performance in the course builds on the knowledge acquired in such courses as “History of Ukrainian literature. Part 1. Introduction to literary studies”, “Part 2. Ancient Literature”, “Part 3. Literature of the First Half of the XIX Century”, “Part 4. Literature of the Second Half of the XIX Century.” Students are also expected to have knowledge of particularities of the Ukrainian literature of previous periods, their style and genre specifics; basics of literary analysis of works of art; the latest literary concepts; the main periods in the history of Ukrainian literature, their features; to have elementary skills of identifying genre and style features of the analyzed text, its subject and problematics; classify literary works; to be able to analyze poetry, prose, drama in the Ukrainian literature of the end of the 19th - the beginning of the 20th century; work independently with fiction and scholarly literature.
Course content
Course description The course aims to equip students with essential knowledge of the development of the Ukrainian literature of the late XIX - early XX centuries, the evolution of artistic thinking at the turn of the century. The course is comprised of two modules which explore the creative works of prominent writers of this period. This enables students’ comprehensive grasp of the development of the Ukrainian literature in the late XIX - early XX centuries, features of literary trends of the period, the ideational and artistic value of the literary heritage of representatives of various stylistic trends, and their treatment of the psychology of a person and the psychology of society

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course combines such formats of instruction as: lectures, practical sessions and independent work. The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are answers at practical sessions, additions and participation in discussions, a presentation, and a module test paper. For the performance in these activities, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum posted on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. It is made up of the scores for the coursework during a term (max. 60, min. 36 points) and the scores earned during the exam (max. 40, min. 24 points). Formative assessment considers answers at practical sessions (8 points), additions and participation in discussions (10 points), express-questioning (10 points), tests (10 points), a presentation (12 points), and module test papers (10 points). Summative assessment is a written exam. The exam card contains two questions: a theoretical question on the history of the Ukrainian literature of the late XIX - early XX centuries (50%); a practical assignment (analysis of a literary work) (50%). Each question weighs 20 points.
