Learning outcomes
PLO 2. Process information effectively: collect relevant information from a variety of sources, including professional literature and electronic databases, critically analyse and interpret it, organize, classify and systematize it. PLO 16. Know and understand basic terms, theories and tenets of translation studies, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 20. Outline the main issues in translation studies, and explain their interconnection within the holistic system of knowledge.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
The program is aimed at students who speak Ukrainian and English at the advanced level. In mastering the course, the students are expected to develop their written and oral communication skills in situations of professional and scientific communication. Before the course, students must know: basic linguistic terms and concepts, basic literary universals, fundamental cultural and scientific national heritage; be able to: apply the acquired speaking skills and literary studies knowledge, linguistic tools in practice; possess basic skills of scientific research and critical attitude to the analyzed phenomena.
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to equip the students with knowledge of basic concepts and issues of modern translation studies, taking into account the Ukrainian and international experience in this sphere; to provide the necessary basis and theoretical background for learning further theoretical and practical courses in translation during all the next years of study. This lecture and practical course provides general theoretical training for future translators: it familiarizes them with the translation terminology, introduces the most important concepts and issues of translation science, and main vectors of modern translation studies, types of translation, various translation decisions, as well as the personality of a translator/ interpreter, his/her proficiency, cultural and moral qualities.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classes are held in the form of lectures and seminars using traditional and innovative teaching methods (multimedia support of lectures and seminars).
Activities during the semester:
• classroom activities: individual, frontal, group work;
• independent work: individual, remote, search work, reproductive, research.
Assessment methods and criteria
The grade for the course consists of the points that students get for their classroom activities during semester and exam.
• Semester assessment includes students’ work on the seminars: oral answers, additions, tests.
1. Oral answer, additions, participation in discussions at lectures and seminars: 21/35 points.
2. Test №1 and Test №2: 15/25 points.
Exam: 1. Written answers to three questions from the course (maximum - 10 points for each question: 10 x 3 = 30 points).
2. Oral question (maximum - 10 points).
The final grade in the discipline (minimum 60, maximum 100 points) consists of the sum of the points for the semester work (minimum 36, maximum 60 points) and the exam (minimum 24, maximum 40 points).
