Course content
The course aims to prepare students for work as consecutive interpreters who possess shorthand techniques. Lecture sessions familiarize students with various aspects of the consecutive interpreting profession, the theoretical foundations of shorthand for interpreters, shorthand systems (including those of G. Matusek, J.-F. Rozan, and D. Gile), and the possibilities of adapting shorthand systems to personal needs, including the creation of additional custom symbols. During practical sessions, students master the technique of shorthand for interpreters, practice consecutive interpreting skills in both directions, learn to apply their own shorthand symbols during consecutive interpreting between a foreign language and their native language, and practice methods of semantic analysis of the content being translated. Improvement of interpreting competencies occurs through simulated consecutive interpreting in various communicative situations and is based on texts, dialogues, and audio-visual materials of different themes.
