Learning outcomes
PLO 7. Understand the major issues of philology and approaches to solving those using relevant methods and innovative approaches. PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of German language and literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 10. Know the rules of standard language and be able to apply them in practice. PLO 12. Analyse language units, determine their interaction, and characterize linguistic phenomena and the underlying processes. PLO 16. Know and understand the basic theories and concepts of the chosen philological specialization, be able to apply them in professional activities.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Possess elementary skills of analysis and interpretation of a separate language at all levels of its structure in accordance with secondary school curricula – phonetic, morphological, lexical, phraseological, syntactic, stylistic, taking into account the view of language as the most important means of human communication, an indispensable sign of ethnicity and nation; express yourself in perfect Ukrainian literary language.
Course content
The course provides students with the basics of general linguistic knowledge, the basic provisions of the theory of language, the most important methods and techniques of researching such a multifaceted phenomenon as language, and is based in its foundations on scientific research principles and linguistic didactic priorities of modern language theory and at the same time takes into account in its sociolinguistic part significant changes in the society, which have happened in recent years in Ukraine as a democratic state. The course consists of four main sections: introductory; external aspect of language learning; the internal aspect of language learning, as well as the comparative aspect of language learning.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Learning activities: lectures, practical classes, independent work. Teaching methods: explanatory and illustrative method, method of problem-based learning (problem-based lecture), heuristic method, educational discussion, creative task (essay, review), preparation of reports.
Assessment methods and criteria
Current assessment: oral response, addition, participation in discussion, report, creative task (essay, review), test with closed answers. The final assessment is an exam. Evaluation criteria for each form of control are given in the course program.
