PLO 1. To communicate freely on professional issues with experts and non-experts in the Ukrainian and foreign languages, in oral and in written form, to use these languages in irder to organize effective cross-cultural communication. PLO 7. To understand the major issues of philology and the ways to solve them using relevant methods and innovative approaches. PLO 8. To know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of the English language and literature, to be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 12. To analyze language units, to determine their interaction, and characterize linguistic phenomena and the underlying processes. PLO 17. To collect, analyze, systematize and interpret language and speech facts and use them to solve complex tasks and problems in specialized fields of professional activity and / or training.

The program is designed for students who have studied English in secondary school and possess an appropriate level. The student is supposed to know: • basic linguistic terms; • principles of linguistic analysis; • semantics and functioning principles of units on all levels; be capable of: • communicating in English (B1 level) • appling linguistic tools; have basic skills of: • selecting, analysing and interpreting speech units; • communicating on linguistic issues.

The aim of the discipline is to train highly qualified specialists in philology, English language teachers for higher institutions and secondary schools as well as to form linguistic and methodological skills and abilities necessary for future foreign language teachers, to broaden the students’ worldview, to improve their theoretical and methodological skills. Attention is paid to lexical, grammatical and stylistic text analysis. Students continue to consolidate and develop their linguistic background obtained while pursuing theoretical and elective courses. Attention is paid to the systemic nature of language phenomena, the interrelation between grammar and vocabulary, stylistic features of language units, semantic aspects of syntax, problems of text coherence. The basic teaching principle is the communicative approach to learning a foreign language with the use of authentic materials and real communicative situations modeling. The curriculum includes practical classes and students’ independent work.

The curriculum includes such activities during the semester: • exercises performed as individual work; creative tasks; • midpoint assessment – written tests on four aspects of language competence; • answers in practical classes

Semester assessment: • students can score the maximum of 60 points during the semester, • exercises performed as individual work; creative tasks: LO 1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.3, 3, 4 - 20 points (maximum) • midpoint assessment – written tests on four aspects of language competence: LO 1.1-1.3, 2.1-2.3, 3, 4 - 30 points • oral answers in practical classes: LO 1.1–4 – 10 points Final assessment in the form of an exam • points for exam – 40 points (maximum) • the examination consists of three written tasks: 1) dictation; 2) grammar test; 3) test on vocabulary and oral part: 1) linguistic analysis of the text; 2) theoretical question on grammar; 3) oral topic. Students who scored a total of less than the critical minimum (36 points) are not allowed to take the exam.
