Prerequisites and co-requisites
The student should know: genus-species division of literature; basic literary theoretical concepts necessary for literary analysis; the main volume of ancient Greek and Roman mythology and the essence of the relationship between myth and literature in their connection with the Western European literary tradition; characteristic features and works of the main representatives of the ancient and Western European literary tradition (Middle Ages, Renaissance, Baroque, Classicism); basic literary theoretical concepts necessary for literary analysis. The student should be able to: use interactive and multimedia tools; obtain the necessary terminological information from reference literature, including literary dictionaries and encyclopedias; carry out an analytical reading of individual works of the ancient and Western European literary tradition (Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, Symbolism, Naturalism).
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to acquaint higher education students with the main trends in the development of foreign (world) literature of the XVIII-XIX centuries, when the foundations of most European national literatures were laid; to promote the formation of students knowledge of the history of Enlightenment literature, romanticism, realism, symbolism, naturalism in the context of the relevant historical and cultural era. The subject of the discipline includes the study of the patterns of development of the literary process of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the originality of the issues and poetic features of the respective periods: Enlightenment, Romanticism, Realism, Symbolism, Naturalism. The course introduces students to the works of the most prominent representatives of Western European and American literature, placing them in the global literary and cultural context. The discipline promotes the acquisition of a set of concepts related to the history of foreign literature of the XVIII-XIX centuries, as well as the acquisition of skills in modern textual analysis.

Educational activities: answer at seminars, writing a terminological dictionary, preparation of a scientific abstract, creative presentation, writing a synopsis of literary-critical sources, final test Teaching methods: lecture, presentation, seminar, independent work, discussion
Assessment methods and criteria
The final grade for the course is formed as overall points of the formative and summative assessment. Formative assessment is represented by answers at seminars (max 35 / min 21 points), keeping a readers diary (max 10 / min 6 points) and writing creative work (max 10 / min 6 points). In total, the formative evaluation constitutes max 60 / min 36 points. Summative assessment is conducted by means of an exam, scoring max 40 / m 21 points. To be admitted to the exam a student must score a minimum of 36 points. To receive a positive grade for the discipline, the score for the exam shall be at least 24 points.
