PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of Swedish literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 12. Analyse language units, determine their interaction, and characterize linguistic phenomena and the underlying processes. PLO 15. Perform linguistic, literary and translation analysis of texts of different styles and genres. PLO 16. Know and understand the basic theories and concepts of the chosen philological specialization, be able to apply them in professional activities.

The academic discipline "History of the Swedish Language" is based on the students' theoretical knowledge acquired in studying the course "Linguistics", practical language and communication skills acquired in studying the practical course of the first language, as well as basic knowledge of Sweden history acquired in studying the course "Linguistic studies of the first language countries".

The discipline "History of the Swedish language" begins by introducing students to the process of the Swedish language emergence and the periodization of its development. After that, it considers the phonetic, orthographic, grammatical and lexical features of the Swedish language at each stage of its development – classical Old Swedish, late Old Swedish, early and late Modern Swedish, as well as modern Swedish. Theoretical positions are illustrated by texts belonging to different stages of the Swedish language development. Students analyze the following texts and excerpts from them: Early Western Iota Law, Eric's Chronicle, Gustav Vasa's Bible, Uluf von Dahlin's Swedish Argus, etc. At the end, the course overviews the main trends in the development of the modern Swedish language, in particular the influence of the English language on its development, and it introduces linguistic futurology, a science that tries to predict what the language will look like in the future.

Lectures, practical classes, independent work.

Oral and written current tests, report, final test. Assessment criteria for each form of control are given in the program of the academic discipline.
