Learning outcomes
PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of Swedish literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 13. Analyze and interpret works of Ukrainian and foreign fiction and oral folk art, determine their specificity and place in the literary process (according to the chosen specialization). PLO 15. Perform linguistic, literary and translation analysis of texts of different styles and genres.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Before starting this course, students should know the main characteristics of ancient literature, possess basic factual knowledge of a humanitarian nature. Be able to determine the place of each literary and artistic period within the general development of world literature; characterize the specifics of a certain cultural and artistic era; analyze key works in the context of the work of this or that artist, distinguish and analyze the plot, images, motives of selected works, etc.; plan and evaluate own work; use interactive and multimedia tools.
Course content
The subject of the course is the study of patterns of development and artistic features of Western European literature and culture of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. The course forms in students an idea of the literary process within the defined periods; during the course, students build a system of knowledge on the history of literary development, acquire an understanding of the formation of aesthetic principles and artistic achievements of each of the specified periods, learn a complex of concepts related to the history of literature of the specified periods (directions, styles, genres, ideological and artistic concepts, etc.) , and also acquire the skills of textual analysis, with the application of cultural-historical, hermeneutic methodologies of interpretation of artistic works, elements of intertextual and comparative analysis are also involved.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures, seminars, independent work.
Assessment methods and criteria
Oral answers at seminar classes, additions, participation in the discussion at seminar classes, modular control work, checking terminological dictionaries and synopsis of additional scientific and critical sources, exam. Evaluation criteria for each form of control are given in the course program.
