Prerequisites and co-requisites
Possession of basic skills of analysis and interpretation of language at all the levels of its structure in accordance with the initial programs of high school (analysis of grammatical forms and syntactic constructions, etymological analysis, analysis and interpretation of sentences and texts).
Course content
The discipline aims at forming students’ knowledge of the basic principles of language theory to be applied in the analysis of specific linguistic phenomena in Latin, theoretical knowledge of grammar and Latin syntax, skills of etymological analysis of modern English words borrowed from Latin, translation and interpretation of prose and poetic works of ancient Rome (with dictionary). The discipline allows students to learn the basics of international Latin terminology in the humanities, lay the foundations for further study of English and other linguistic studies, comparative and comparative-historical research in lexicology, semantics, morphology and syntax on the material of both Latin and modern Western European languages.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Forms of study consist of lectures, practical classes, and students’ self-study.
Teaching methods include answers at the practical classes, learning by heart Latin sentantiae, terminological work, research work, creative work and test papers.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final mark for the course is formed as the sum of the points of the current and final control.
Formative assessment includes answers at the practical classes (max 12/min 6 points), learning by heart Latin sentantiae (max 4/min 3 points), terminological work (max 10/min 6 points), research work (max 10/min 6 points), creative work (max 4/min 3 points), and test papers (max 20/min 12 points)
Summative assessment is arranged in the form of the exam. The exam scores max 40/min 24 points. To be admitted to the exam a student must score min 36 points. To receive a positive mark in the discipline, the mark for the exam must be at least 24 points.
The exam is conducted in the form of written work - two theoretical questions with open answers, each of which is evaluated with a maximum of 20 points.
