Learning outcomes
1.1 To know the results of contemporary sociological research on key social issues. 1.2 To know the system of basic sociological indicators for studying the quality of life and social problems of modern societies. 2.1 To be able to work with social information, data from sociological research. 2.2 To be able to identify, analyze and interpret the actual social problems of society development. 2.3 To do adequate and accurate referencing of scientific sources in English, to substantiate their own position, to make independent conclusions. 2.4 To be able to use current and actual information and communication technologies in professional communication; exchange of information; collecting, analyzing, processing and interpreting data and visualizing the results of scientific activity. 3 To demonstrate skills of reasoned presentation of own opinion, competent and tolerant discussion with opponents. 4 To demonstrate skills of independent research work, mastering of new knowledge.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. To know English at the level of B1 (average level), theoretical foundations of sociology, contemporary sociological research projects, sociological approach to the analysis of social phenomena, terminology, conceptual basis and foundations of modern sociological theory and research. 2. To be able to work with sociological data, read professional sociological publications and formulate ideas in English. 3. To have basic skills in searching and selecting relevant information in English; to use methodologies and conceptual ideas of sociological analysis; to debate the issues; to present and discuss own position on the selected topic.

І. Theoretical and methodological challenges to social sciences. Topic 1. Sociology and methodological pluralism. Topic 2. The debate of quantitative and qualitative methodologies of sociology. ІІ. Current issues to sociology. Topic 3. Dynamics of inequalities: global and local challenges. Topic 4. Quality of life and sociological measurement. Topic 5. Globalization and Euro integration: challenges to Ukrainian Society. Topic 6. Future Challenges: Current Debates. Topic 7. Migration, refugees, IDP’s: current challenges. Topic 8. Social risks, social security, terrorism.

Assessment methods and criteria
1. Participation in discussions: in classes, several forms of individual and group work on the basis of analysis of read materials (LR1.1, LR1.2, LR2.1, LR3, LR4) – max 30 / min 18 points. 2. Abstract on the scientific paper in English (300 words) within the frame of the MA research (LR1.1, LR1.2, LR2.1, LR2.4) - max 10 / min 6 points. 3. Presentation on the topic within the framework of the master’s dissertation on the basis of analysis of five articles in English (published in peer-reviewed journals) (LR2.1, LR2.2, LR3, LR4) - max 20 / min 12 points. 4. Commented bibliography of 15 literary sources (LR2.3, LR2.1) - max 20 / min 12 points. 5. Peer-Review of presentation (РН 3) - max 10 / min 6 points. 6. Control assignment (LR2.1, LR2.2, LR2.4, LR3, LR4) - max 20 / min 12 points. Final evaluation: pass-exam.
