            Prerequisites and co-requisites
        
        
            Successful mastering of the discipline requires a level of English proficiency not lower than B2 on the CEFR scale. In addition, graduate students have:
1. Know:
• basic methods of searching and analyzing scientific information;
• basics of discourse and text theory;
• structural-compositional, linguistic, communicative and rhetorical features of various texts of Ukrainian scientific discourse.
2. Be able to:
• to effectively use the English language in oral and written communication, in various genre-stylistic varieties and registers of communication (official, unofficial, neutral) to solve various communicative tasks;
• create oral and written texts of various genres and styles in English;
• carry out linguistic analysis of texts of various styles and genres;
3. To have elementary skills of scientific and research activities.
        
    
            Course content
        
        
            English in scientific communication: linguistic-stylistic and communicative-pragmatic features of English-language scientific discourse. Main genres of scientific writing (theses, articles, abstracts, abstracts, dissertations, monographs). Distinguishing features of scientific and research works from popular science works.
Leading academic publishing houses and scientific journals of the world; differences of quality real magazines from fake/
Publications in English-language international scientific journals: types of publications, basic requirements and stages of manuscript preparation, typical reasons for rejection of publication.
Forms of processing original scientific texts: annotation, abstracting, reviewing, writing a literature review in English.
Scientific article as a genre of English-language academic writing: its structural components, functional and linguistic and stylistic features.
Annotation as a genre of English-language academic writing: types of annotations and requirements for them. Typical mistakes when writing annotations.
Optimization of English-language scientific works (articles) for search engines: principles of selecting a title and keywords, characteristic features of an optimized annotation.
Analysis of typical errors that occur during the creation of an English-language academic text; correction and editing of the text.
Writing a scientific work in English: substantiating the topic, defining the goal and tasks, organizing the research, structuring the material, presenting arguments, formulating conclusions and evaluating the results.
Bibliographic description of sources; international publication design styles. Rules for observing academic integrity and measures to detect and prevent plagiarism. Correct citation and design of links in English.
