Learning outcomes

Prerequisites and performance requirements
To successfully complete the course, students are required to have prior knowledge of such courses as “The modern Ukrainian language”, “Pedagogy”, “Psychology”, have a good command of Ukrainian for academic communication, know the structure of Ukrainian, as well as the genres of oral and written communication in it; have a good grounding in pedagogy, in particular, didactics; know the major aspects of age psychology.
Course content
Course description
The course aims to develop prospective teachers’ instructional competence. It focuses on building students’ skills in using approaches, methods, and means of teaching Ukrainian; application of national and international expertise in teaching, assessment, and improvement of learners’ knowledge and skills; ability to tackle learning problems and get adapted to changes in education. The course is comprised of four modules which cover: the theoretical foundations of Ukrainian teaching methodology as a science, the tenets of teaching aspects of language and speech activities; practical applications of theory in developing teaching and assessment activities, as well as writing a course paper. The course ends with an exam.

Classroom activities and teaching techniques
The course is taught within two terms combining such formats of instruction as lectures and practical sessions, and independent work. The major activities that engage students and provide evidence to assess their performance are practical assignments, an end-of-course test paper, and a course paper. For the performance in these activities in the second term, a student can score max. 60 and min. 36 points. A detailed description of activities and formative assessment is presented in the course curriculum posted on the official website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment
A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. The total score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 60, min. 36 points) and the scores earned in the summative assessment - exam. The formative assessment considers performance at practical sessions (21 points), a course paper (20 points), and an end-of-course test paper (19 points). The exam is administered in writing; the exam card contains four tasks aimed at assessing knowledge of theory and practical skills; the performance of each task is allotted max. 10 points.
