Successful performance in the course builds on prior skills of interpreting the basic laws of natural sciences as well as the skills of information searching and processing.
Course content
Course description The course equips students with the skills of critical thinking as well as the knowledge of the fundamental concepts of theoretical ecology, principles of functioning of ecological systems, the interaction of living organisms and humans in the socio-sphere, and the interrelationship of the biosphere and the technosphere. The course also develops the ability to identify global and regional environmental problems and the problems related to resources, ecology, and economy. It is comprised of two modules. Module 1 considers the subject matter, objectives, and basic concepts of ecology, a typology of ecological factors, and particularities of ecological research at the autecological and demecological levels. Module 2 focuses on synecology and ecological monitoring. Summative assessment is a pass/fail test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Classroom activities and teaching techniques The course combines such forms of instruction as lectures and independent work. The major activities the students are engaged in and further assessed are progress test papers and module (end-of-term) test papers. A student can earn a maximum of 100 and a minimum of 60 points for completing these activities. A detailed description of the criteria to assess the coursework is presented in the course curriculum made public on the website of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology.
Assessment methods and criteria
Assessment A student’s final grade is based on a 100-point grading system. The total score is made up of the scores earned for the performance during the term (max. 100, min. 60 points). Formative assessment involves progress test papers (40 points) and end-of-end module test papers (60 points). A ‘Pass/fail’ assessment is based on the outcomes of the course performance during the term and does not involve any additional assessment events. To succeed in the pass/fail assessment, students are required to gain a passing grade of 60; students fail if the score is below 60.
