Learning outcomes
PLO 8. To know and understand the language system, the general properties of literature as an art of speech, the history of the Arabic language and literature, and to be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities.
PLO 9. To characterize the dialectal and social varieties of the Arabic language, describe the sociolinguistic situation in the countries of the Arab East.
PLO 12. To analyze Arabic linguistic units, determine their interaction and characterize linguistic phenomena and processes that cause them.
PLO 15. To carry out linguistic, literary and special philological analysis of Arabic texts of various styles and genres.
PLO 16. To know and understand the basic concepts, theories and concepts of the chosen philological specialization, to be able to apply it.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Successful mastering of the disciplines “The Arabic language: basic level”, “The Arabic language: intermediate level”, “Basics of translation practice of Arabic”, “Basics of translation theory of Arabic”; knowledge of phonetics, vocabulary and grammar of the Arabic language obtained from the practical course of Arabic as well as linguistic terminology from the course “Basics of Linguistics”.
Course content
The purpose of the discipline is to acquaint students with the peculiarities of speech in various spheres of functioning of the Arabic language (in everyday, official, scientific, journalistic and literary spheres); with the variety of linguistic and stylistic means of the Arabic language for the full and effective transmission of information in accordance with the purpose and conditions of communication, as well as with the specifics of translating texts of various functional styles. The discipline is а part of the complex discipline "Theory and History of the Arabic Language" and has a theoretical orientation.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Learning activities comprise interactive lectures and seminar classes. Self-study of students involves preparation for oral responses, reports with the analyses of scientific literature, research presentation, and tasks of translating text of various styles.
Assessment methods and criteria
Semestral assessment is based on the oral testing, written assignments,participation in discussions, reports and presentations – 36/60 points, modular test papers – 12/20 points, final test paper – 12/20 points. The intermediate control is given based on the results of the student’s work throughout the entire semester and does not require additional assessment measures. Students who scored 60 points, the required minimum, receive “passed”. Students who failed to score 60 points, the required minimum, receive “failed”. Those students who scored totally less than 60 points during the semester period should complete a test paper in the items which he/she failed to pass. Final score 60-100 – passed; 0-59 – failed.
