Learning outcomes
Programme learning outcomes: PLO 2: Master the national and foreign languages confidently enough to perform the written and spoken communication, namely in the professional and scholarly communicative situations; to present the study results in the national and foreign languages. PLO 21: To be aware of specific features translation demonstrates in various media (textual, audiovisual, mass media, web space) and able to use the requisite tools and techniques. PLO 22: To analyze, elaborate and substantiate the translatorial decisions, choice of tools and specialized translation quality assurance means. PLO 24.1: To use the necessary strategies and tactics of translating and editing the medical, legal, scientific and mass media texts. PLO 25.1: To use translation techniques in the directions from Ukrainian into English and German/ French/ Spanish /Italian/ Portuguese.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
The programme is aimed at students with an adequate level of training in English, Theory and Practice of Translation. The student should know: basic terminological units of biomedical field; be able to: perform a correct translation of highly specialized texts while meeting the target language norms in a complete adherence with the extant standards; acquire a requisite minimum of extralinguistic knowledge of medicine and biology, the Ukrainian and English-speaking biomedical cultures. It implies a comprehensive study of every mode of highly specialized translation, the focus being on the correct rendering the source text’s genre-stylistic component, syntactic structure and adequate reproduction of their content’s components.
Course content
The discipline is aimed at forming practical skills and knowledge of fundamental genre translation studies. The attention is focused on developing the modern tools of medical translation necessary for professional training. The students continue to develop and train their skills of systematization and generalization of linguistic knowledge based on the theoretical courses and elective syllabi. The course is based on honing specialized translation techniques and forming the scholarly-experimental apparatus of future translators and translation trainers. The study is based on the individually-based and cognitive-communicative principles using authentic materials. The study comprises practical classes and individual training. At the end of the term, the students take a pass-fail test.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Types of learning activities during the term: • spoken answers during the practical classes; • written assignments within individual training; • individual task; • group translation project; • final control test.
Assessment methods and criteria
Term evaluation: • maximum number of points during the term – 75; • spoken answers: LO1.1–1.3, 2.3–2.5, 4.2, 4.4 – 10 points; • written assignments (individual training): LO1.1, 1.3, 2.2, 2.4.-2.5, 4.4 – 10 points; • individual task: LO1.1–1.3, 4.1, 4.3 – 20 points; • group translation project: LO1.3, 2.5, 3.2, 4.1, 4.4 – 10 points; • final control test: LO1.3, 2.5, 3.2, 4.1, 4.4 – 25 points. • The final control test comprises three written tasks: 1) theoretical item, 2) translation, 3) commented translation. Terms of pass/fail test eligibility: Students having obtained a sum of points, which is below the critical evaluation minimum, i.e. 45 points, are not admitted to the pass/fail test.
