Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Successful completion of courses: "Introduction to Linguistics," "General Linguistics" (topics: language origin, genealogical classification of languages; language and speech; form and content of linguistic elements; development of lexical composition, word meaning, semantic change), "Phonetics of Modern German," "Grammar of Modern German," "Lexicology of Modern German," "History of the German Language" (phonetic, lexical, and grammatical features of modern German; emergence of dialects; national literary language). Course content
The discipline covers the issues of regional and social variation in modern German language and explores the characteristics of German literary language in countries where it is primarily used. It pays attention to the assessment of the composition and functional status of language varieties (forms) and addresses the problems of divergent development and national distinctiveness of literary language in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, as well as the functioning of dialects and the interaction of literary German in Germany with its variants in Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg, and dialects in the countries where it is spoken. The aim of the discipline is to demonstrate the differential nature of the German language, which serves independent nations and states in the modern world, as well as its registers manifested in the language of youth, professional groups, and jargon. The discipline is part of an elective block of courses and is an integral part of the study of philological sciences. The course is conducted through seminar sessions (74 academic hours) during which practical tasks are discussed and solved. Students acquire part of the material through self-study (76 hours) with the completion of assignments, preparation of presentations, and writing of control works, which are taken into account during ongoing assessment. Assessment is carried out through an exam at the end of the 8th semester. Lexicographic manuals, excerpts from literary works, newspaper articles, advertisements, poems, songs, fairy tales, proverbs, and aphorisms written in German dialects, as well as videos, serve as practical materials during the sessions. Literary German language serves as a background for determining linguistic and social peculiarities of dialects.

Assessment methods and criteria
The independent work involves preparing presentations/essays on the topics being studied. The control works contain texts/videos that exhibit characteristics of specific variant usage in the German language. Students determine the affiliation of the texts to a particular variant, dialect, or sociolect of the German language and describe their main characteristics. The exam consists of a theoretical question (maximum 20 points, oral) and a practical question (maximum 20 points, written) that involves analyzing texts related to the covered material.
