Course content
After World War II, when the secularising process becomes more visible in Britain and Europe, generations of novelists engage in the discussion over the role of religion. Their response is voiced through a wide spectrum of discourses. The course is aimed at reading some of the central literary texts of the 2d part of the twentieth century, in which various “modes of secularization” (C. Taylor) are explicitly manifested. It also informs students about the recently emerged post-secular literary studies -- a response to what J. Habermas dubs as ‘post-secularisation’ and P. Berger calls ‘de-secularisation’. A ‘religious turn,’ characterised by a new openness to religion, gives way to a distinctively post-secular trend in literature as the body of post-secular texts constantly grows. The way in which contemporary English novels emphasise on the phenomenon of belief as, a priori, a complex issue is central to the course. Students are required to write a literary analysis essay.

Assessment methods and criteria
The grade is formed as the sum of points gained in the in-process evaluations of academic progress which weigh of up to 100% of the course grade: 70 for oral answers in seminars, 10 for writing an abstract of an English-language article, and 20 for writing an essay and presenting it in the class. No summative assessment activity is required. A student who has obtained minimum of 60 points is granted a successful completion of the course. If a student does not attain a minimum grade of 60 points he or she is required to submit the assignments set for this course.
