Themes and concepts in this course represent the dynamic development of literary studies as a part of the philological research. To master the course the applicant should not only know the key theoretical aspects of previous courses in the literary studies and main stages of literary process in the countries of the specialty he/she majored in. Most important is the ability of an applicant to know the dominant philosophical and aesthetic systems which might serve as a basis or an impulse for creative work of the artists. General categories and notions studied in the course “Introduction to Literary Studies”, theoretical aspects of and skills in comparative literary analysis that the student has acquired in the program “Bachelor of Philology” are the important prerogative of success at the higher level of education on the way to Master’s degree.
Course content
The course aims at widening and making systemic the students’ knowledge of the history of western literary criticism, of the basic concepts and categories of the main critical approaches of the 19th – 21th centuries. Special accent is made on those aspects of literary criticism which are focused on the on-going cultural dialogue concerning the nature and value of a creative writing and its functions in society.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The course consists of 2 modules. Module 1 covers the evolution of the main concepts of the European literary criticism from antiquity to the 19th c. Module 2 presents the development of aims and methods of main critical approaches of the 19th – 21st cc. Methodology of the lectures (30 academic hours) is based on the hermeneutic principles of cognitive approach to the basic categories of literary criticism. Seminars (26 hours) are planned in the system of active teaching – as discussions and research of the focal points in critical texts. If a Seminar is missed, the student writes an essay (4-5 pages) on the topic recommended by the teacher.
Assessment methods and criteria
Final mark for the course is a sum of points for current and final control. Forms of the current control the student’s sum of marks for answers at the Seminars (max 35/min 21 points). In case of missing a Seminar student presents a short essay (max 10/min 6 points) and/or write a control test (max 10/min 6 points). The sum of points for all forms of a current control before the exam is max 60/min 36 points. The course is finalized in exam (max. 40/ min 21points). The minimal admittance score is 36 points. For a positive mark a student should get at the exam not less than 24 points.
