Prerequisites and co-requisites
The student must know:
- main genre theories and categories of genre analysis of the contemporary novel;
- forms of genre transformations and modifications of novelistic forms;
- features of the literary process in terms of genre thinking of the day;
- scientific achievements of leading native and foreign genre researchers about novel.
The student must be able to:
- to determine the genre modifications of foreign contemporary novel;
- to trace the evolution of novel in recent foreign literature;
- synthesize the leading characteristics and functions of the modern foreign novel;
- identify forms of genre modifications of the contemporary novel.
Course content
The discipline "Genre Paradigm of Contemporary Foreign Novel" aims to introduce students with native and foreign theories of novel and develop skills of genre analysis of the contemporary foreign novel. Students' attention is focused on foreign literature of the XXI-th century. The structure of the course provides consideration of modern genre thinking in its main stages, clarification of the genetic connection of the contemporary foreign novel with all genre system of world literature.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Forms of study consist of lectures, seminars, and students’ self-study.
Teaching methods include answers at the seminars, presentation of individual project, and a final test paper.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final mark for the course is formed as the sum of the points of the current and final control.
Formative assessment includes answers at seminars (max 35/min 21 points), presentation of individual project (max 10/min 5 points), and a final test paper (max 15/min 10 points). In total, in-process evaluations of academic progress during the semester a student can gain max 60/min 36 points.
Summative assessment is arranged in the form of the exam. The exam scores max 40/min 24 points. To be admitted to the exam a student must score min 36 points. To receive a positive mark in the discipline, the mark for the exam must be at least 24 points.
