Prerequisites and co-requisites
The student must know: - main genre theories and categories of genre analysis; - forms of genre transformations and modifications; - features of the literary process in terms of genre thinking of the day; - scientific achievements of leading native and foreign genre researchers. The student must be able to: - to determine the genre affiliation of works of foreign literature; - to trace the evolution of genres in foreign literature; - to build a genus-species-genre vertical; - identify forms of genre transformations and modifications.
Course content
The discipline "Fundamentals of Genre Studies" aims to introduce students with native and foreign genre theories and develop skills of genre analysis of literary work. Students' attention is focused on foreign literature. The structure of the course provides consideration of genre thinking in its main stages, clarification of the genetic connection of all genres in the system of world literature.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Forms of study consist of lectures, seminars, and students’ self-study. Teaching methods include answers at the seminars, writing a paper, and a final test paper.
Assessment methods and criteria
The course ends with a credit. The grade is formed as the sum of points gained in the in-process evaluations of academic progress, which weigh of up to 100% of the course grade: max 60 for oral answers in seminars, max 10 for writing a paper, and max 30 for a final test paper. No summative assessment activity is required. A student who has obtained minimum of 60 points is granted a successful completion of the course. If a student does not attain a minimum grade of 60 points, he/she is required to submit the assignments set for this course. The final evaluation of learning outcomes is carried out on a single 100-point scale. There is applied the scale of conformity with grades: Passed 60-100; Fail 0-59.
