Learning outcomes
PLO 2. Process information effectively: collect relevant information from a variety of sources, including professional literature and electronic databases, critically analyze and interpret it, organize, classify and systematize it. PLO 5. Collaborate with colleagues, representatives of other cultures and religions, supporters of different political views, etc. PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of English and the two studied Western European languages, and literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 13. Analyze and interpret works of Ukrainian and English fiction and oral folk art, to determine their peculiarities and place in the literary process. PLO 15. Perform linguistic, literary and specific philological analysis of texts of different styles and genres.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
To reach the aims and fulfill the tasks of the course the students need to know and use the basic historical and theoretical notions of the previous courses in literary studies – i.e. in Antiquity, Middle Ages and Renaissance. It is also necessary for them to actively use the theoretical ideas and practical skills formed in the course “Introduction to Literary Studies”.
Course content
The aim of the course is to make the students know the development of artistic ideas and the system of literary genres of the “long 18th c.” in the largest anglophone communities in the world – the UK and the US. The main cognitive focus in culture studies of the 17th -18th cc. is the transition from the literary codes of the late feudal order to Modernity as a new paradigm of thinking; the insistent cultural dialogue of the 3 systems of art – Baroque, Classicism and Enlightenment. Module 1 is devoted to study of the metaphysical poetry and Classicism in the 17th c. literature. Module 2 is centered on the forms of the early Enlightenment realism. The wide spectrum of the new approaches to literature is presented in Module 3: i.e. poetry by R. Burns, comedies by R.B. Sheridan, sentimental prose by L Sterne, elements of Preromantic early gothic novels. The last topic in the course is the review of the American literature in the times of the War for Independence.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Methodology of the lectures (14 academic hours) is based on polycritical perspective – i.e. the basic categories of the text are characterized in unity of a sociocultural approach; existential and narratological approach. Seminars (16 hours) are planned and held in the system of active teaching – as discussions and research of the representative texts in each thematic block of the course. The student that has missed a seminar writes a short essay (3-4 pages) on the topic recommended by the teacher, as a feedback.
Assessment methods and criteria
Final score for the course is formed as a sum of points for all forms of control. Forms of the current control are the sum of marks for answers at the seminars (max 40/min 24 points); marks for module written tests (max 20/ min 12 балів) The final score for the course exam is max 100/min 60 points. Students that did not manage to collect 36 points during the term are not admitted to the exam.
