PLO 10. Know the rules of standard language and be able to apply them in practice. PLO 11. Know the principles, technologies and techniques of oral and written texts of different genres and styles creation in Ukrainian, English and two other Western European languages. PLO 15. Perform linguistic, literary and specific philological analysis of texts of different styles and genres. PLO 20.3 Know the features of storytelling as a media tool of modern communication and use it to teach the English language and literature. PLO 22.3. Know the peculiarities of the use of language expressive means to influence the audience and be able to use them in the production of own written or oral text.

Full-time form

The program is aimed at students who have been learning English throughout first, second, third, and fourth semesters of BA studies and possess a correspondent level of proficiency. A students has to know: basic linguistic terminology; principles of analyzing language material; peculiarities of semantics and functions of units from all levels of the English language; be able to use linguistic tools in practice; possess elementary skills of research, analysis, and interpretation of linguistic facts; be able to engage in discussion on linguistic topics.

The goal of the discipline is to form skills responsible for writing texts in English. Students have to learn how to write functional (resumes, cover letters, application essays) and creative texts (argumentative essays, reviews, parodies on famous works of literature, short stories, etc). This goal presupposes students getting acquainted with the primary types of written texts, genres, proof-reading and editing methods. Lots of attention is to be paid to the lexical, grammatical, and genre-stylistic analysis of texts serving as perfect examples. Students are supposed to be understanding of the peculiarities concerning storytelling as a media instrument for modern communication as well as specifics of media text. Studies are to be conducted based on the primary notions of communicative approach to foreign language studying with the use of authentic materials and modeling of written texts formats of creative and functional application.

Planned events throughout the semester: • tasks performed as part of independent work; • intermediate testing – written tests on theoretical aspects and creative tasks at the volume of 250 words maximum; • work during practical classes.

Semester assessment: • maximum points for the entire semester – 100 points, • tasks done as part of independent work: SR 1.1–1.3, 2.1–2.3, 3, 4 – 20 points • intermediate testing – written tests featuring four aspects of language proficiency: SR 1.1-1.3, 2.1, 2.3, 4 – 30 points • work during practical classes: SR 1.1–4 – 10 points (evaluation dependent on the degree of elaboration in answers); Final evaluation is done in the form of credit: • writing weekly essays – 20 points, • credit test: 1) test on theory (10 points); 2) question response (10 points).
