Learning outcomes
PLO 2. Process information effectively: collect relevant information from a variety of sources, including professional literature and electronic databases, critically analyze and interpret it, organize, classify and systematize it. PLO 5. Collaborate with colleagues, representatives of other cultures and religions, supporters of different political views, etc. PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of English and the two studied Western European languages, and literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 13. Analyze and interpret works of Ukrainian and English fiction and oral folk art, to determine their peculiarities and place in the literary process. PLO 15. Perform linguistic, literary and specific philological analysis of texts of different styles and genres.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Successful mastering of the previous parts of the course Foreign Literature (1-2). 2. Knowledge of basic terms and concepts of Literary Studies in Ukrainian and English. 3. Skills of applying basic approaches of literary analysis and skills of text interpretation.
Course content
The course introduces students to the development of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance literature. It reveals the content of the symbolic and allegorical type of medieval artistic thinking, introduces the main genres of medieval literature. Students gain knowledge about the Renaissance, its geographical and chronological boundaries, the role of ancient heritage and the connection with the culture of the High Middle Ages. The course emphasizes the concept of Renaissance humanism, anthropocentrism. The Renaissance is represented by a variety of new styles and genres. Students continue to develop general skills of literary-critical analysis and the ability to independently interpret literary texts.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Forms of study consist of lectures, seminars, and students’ self-study. Teaching methods include answers at the seminars, test on concepts, and test paper.
Assessment methods and criteria
The final mark for the course is formed as the sum of the points of formative and summative assessments. Formative assessment includes answers at seminars (max 32/min 20 points), test on concepts (max 10/min 6 points), and a final test paper (max 18/min 10 points). In total, in-process evaluations of academic progress during the semester a student can gain max 60/min 36 points. Summative assessment is arranged in the form of the exam. The exam scores max 40/min 24 points. To be admitted to the exam, a student must score min 36 points. To receive a positive mark in the discipline, the mark for the exam must be at least 24 points.
