PLO 2. Process information effectively: collect relevant information from a variety of sources, including professional literature and electronic databases, critically analyze and interpret it, organize, classify and systematize it. PLO 5. Collaborate with colleagues, representatives of other cultures and religions, supporters of different political views, etc. PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of English and the two studied Western European languages, and literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 13. Analyze and interpret works of Ukrainian and English fiction and oral folk art, to determine their peculiarities and place in the literary process. PLO 15. Perform linguistic, literary and specific philological analysis of texts of different styles and genres.

Full-time form

Prerequisites for the study of the offered discipline: students must know the basic scope of ancient Greek and Roman mythology and the essence of the correlation between myth and literature; periodization of the literary process of the Ancient era; genus-species division of literature. Students must have basic skills and abilities to determine the special place of ancient literature in the global literary continuum and the development of European civilization; to trace the evolution of the main genres of literature – epic and lyric poetry as well as drama; to carry out analytical reading of particular works of ancient literature, both Greek and Roman.

The subject of the discipline includes elucidation of the laws of literary heritage of ancient Greece and Rome formation and development, outlining the range of socio-historical and aesthetic problems, poetic features of ancient literature. The aim of the discipline is to introduce the phenomenon of the ancient world, the genesis and evolution of ancient literature, the uniqueness of the ancient literary tradition and its significance for the world literature to future philologists.

The syllabus of the discipline includes lectures and seminars, as well as independent students’ work. Forms of tuition include oral response at seminars, creative presentations, test tasks.

The term number of points is accumulated from the points gained in the process of mastering the material on all course topics and fulfilling individual tasks. A student can score a maximum of 60 points - 40 for oral answers at seminars, 10 for creative presentations, 10 for test assignments. The final assessment is conducted in the form of an exam (maximum 40 points). To be allowed to sit the exam, a student must score at least 36 points. To get a “pass” in the discipline, the grade for the exam can not be less than 24 points. The examination card presupposes answers to 3 questions: theoretical (maximum 10 points), theoretical and practical (maximum 15 points) and practical (maximum 15 points).
