Learning outcomes
PLO 2. To demonstrate the proper level of English language proficiency in written and oral communication, especially in professional and scientific communication, and present research results in English.
PLO 3. To apply modern methods and technologies, in particular, IT for effective implementation of professional activities and ensuring the quality of scientific research in a specific philological area.
PLO 11. To demonstrate in-depth knowledge within the chosen philological specialization.
PLO 12. To carry out a scientific analysis of linguistic and literary materials, to interpret and structure them, following classical and modern methodological principles, and make generalizations based on the obtained data.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
To know English at the level not lower than B2 of CEFR, and the norms of academic English; to be able to work analytically on professional texts, and to have communicative skills to model written texts.
Course content
A master thesis provides opportunities for students to conduct an independent scientific study in the field of English philology, namely linguistics, literary studies or discourse studies, and aims to assess their professional knowledge in the subject area, as well as mastering of the methodology of linguistic analysis of language material. It aims to develop students’ ability to plan and organize research, use different resources, interpret and present their research results, using innovative technologies. A master thesis is part of the state certification of graduates of specialty №035 “Philology”, specialization №035.041 “Germanic languages and literature (translation included), first language – English”.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The modes of the course delivery encompass lectures, seminars and self-study, incl. oral answers, scientific discussions, essays, and written tests.
the choice of a master thesis and writing a plan, selecting and working on scientific sources relevant to the topic of the student’s master thesis, making a list of references, writing a thesis introduction and a theoretical part; analysing the collected material and writing analytical parts and a thesis conclusion; preparing the thesis manuscript according to the requirements, creating a multimodal presentation and getting ready for the public defence of the master thesis.
Assessment methods and criteria
The form of summative assessment is a defense. The manuscript of the master thesis and other documents (feedback from the scientific supervisor, a review, and a plagiarism check certificate) are submitted to the Examination Committee. Before the submission, the master thesis is assessed by the scientific supervisor, and then by the reviewer. The public defence of the master thesis takes the form of an oral presentation that uses different forms of visualization. The presentation is followed by a scientific discussion. The maximum score for a master thesis is 100 points, the minimum score (a positive grade) is 60 points. The total score for a master thesis is based on three parameters: the scientific supervisor’s assessment, the reviewer’s assessment and the defense of the thesis (see § 7 of the Syllabus).
