Prerequisites and co-requisites
To know the normative grammar of ancient Greek and Latin languages, history of
classical languages, history of the ancient world, ancient poetry.
Course content
Objectives of the discipline - to become familiar with the history of paleography of
classical languages; specific techniques of writing on papyrus and parchment, classification
of manuscripts, graphic and linguistic peculiarities, literary and cursive type of writing,
development of minuscules, principles of tachyography, a complex of criteria for
manuscripts dating. Annotation of the discipline. Principles of organization of writing and
formation of manuscripts on papyrus, parchment and paper, peculiarities of of uncial and
minuscule writing, of different schools and scriptoriums. Literary and italic styles of
writing. Varieties of handwritten texts (autograph, apograph, manuscript, prototype,
antigraph). Typical errors and proofreading in manuscripts. Bilinguals and palimpsests.
Criteria of manuscripts dating. Format of manuscripts, type of writing, writing style, text
organization, ligatures, commentary, initials, headings and colophons, diacritics and
punctuation, abbreviations, tachographic signs. Influence of calligraphic tradition on the
formation of the first printing fonts.

Lectures, independent work, practical lessons, individual tasks (project, presentation), oral
test. and module test.
Assessment methods and criteria
Final assessment:credit test. The scores for the semester comprise the points for the
mastering of the materials for the entire course. The total score for the semester consists of
the points for the classwork (which provides for independent work with the theoretical
materials for the classwork: oral answers, tests, giving presentations, project demonstration)
and for independent work (preparing presentations and projects).
All types of activities for the semester are estimated as follows:
