PLO 8. Know and understand the system of language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of Swedish literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 12. Analyse language units, determine their interaction, and characterize linguistic phenomena and the underlying processes. PLO 16. Know and understand the basic theories and concepts of the chosen philological specialization, be able to apply them in professional activities.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
The academic discipline "Theoretical phonetics of the Swedish language" requires mastery of the Swedish language at a level not lower than A2 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, as well as knowledge of the main features of Swedish pronunciation, acquired in the Swedish language practical classes.
Course content
The academic discipline "Theoretical phonetics of the Swedish language" includes lectures and practical classes. In lectures, students acquire knowledge of the main sections of phonetics: acoustic phonetics, articulatory phonetics, phonology, the relationship between phonemes and graphemes of the Swedish alphabet, the phonetic principle application in Swedish orthography. It considers the distinction between sound and phoneme, allophones. It examines articulation characteristics of vowel and consonant phonemes of the Swedish language, prosodic features of Swedish phonetics: verbal and phrasal stress, melody. In practical classes, students get acquainted with the International Phonetic Alphabet and its application for transcribing Swedish speech, as well as acquire practical skills of transcribing Swedish speech.
