Learning outcomes
PLO 7. Understand the major issues of philology and approaches to solving those using relevant methods and innovative approaches. PLO 8. Know and understand the system of the Ancient Greek, Latin and a foreign language, the general properties of literature as the art of word, the history of the Ancient Greek and Latin languages, and literature, be able to apply this knowledge in professional activities. PLO 12. Analyze language units, determine their interaction, and characterize linguistic phenomena and the underlying processes. PLO 16. Know and understand the basic notions, theories and concepts of the chosen philological specialization, be able to apply them in professional activity. PLO 23. Understand the ideological foundations of various theories of language origin, describe language universals and the typology of languages, analyze language as an activity, apply knowledge from different branches of linguistics in professional activities.

Prerequisites and co-requisites
Course pre-requisites: the main characteristics of literary studies as a science of the art of speech; the connection of literary studies with other humanities; to have basic knowledge in humanities. - To be able to collect and interpret information concerning peculiarities of the literary process development in various historical circumstances over the centuries; changes in basic concepts in the analysis of literary phenomena and processes; plan and evaluate one’s own work; to use interactive and multimedia tools. - To possess elementary skills of scientific research and management; critical attitude to the analyzed phenomena; to use professional informational sources in foreign language; to interprete literary texts; to produce complex oral and written messages; to interact and cooperate while learning to explore.
Course content
The purpose of discipline – to systematize and comprehend knowledge in literary studies, to gain skills in literary analysis, to know professional terminology, basic literary categories and concepts, focus on content load, specifics of literary text. The discipline involves classroom work in the form of lectures and independent work aiming at critical reading of literary texts and creative writing tasks. In the course of studying the discipline, students master the modern method of analyzing literary texts, develop systematic principles and means of analytical thinking, apply the method of literary studies in practice.

Assessment methods and criteria
Semester assessment: The semester number of points is formed by the points received by the student in the process of creating material from the entire educational course. The overall grade for the semester consists of points received for classroom work (which synthesizes and independent work on processing theoretical material for classroom preparation: oral answers, heuristic conversations, participation in discussions, project presentation) and for independent work (preparation of project presentation). All types of work for the semester have as a result: • in the maximum amount of 100 points, • a minimum of 60 points. Final assessment: a credit.
