Prerequisites and co-requisites
1. Successful mastering of compulsory disciplines studied at the Department of Meteorology and Climatology - Astronomy, Atmospheric Physics, Atmospheric Optics, Radiation Processes in the Atmosphere, Climatology, Synoptic Meteorology.
2. Knowledge of the theoretical foundations of physics, astronomy, physical geography, the ability to establish cause-and-effect relationships between phenomena and processes occurring in the atmosphere, information about which comes from various sources.
3. Possession of methods of synthesis and analysis of information.
Course content
The course covers the main issues related to the theoretical foundations and methodological principles of obtaining, processing, interpretation and practical use of information received from meteorological satellites. The course consists of three content modules. The first one is devoted to the study of the basics of artificial satellites movement, types of meteorological satellites orbits, modern technologies of satellite data acquisition, methods of primary processing of satellite images, main types of satellite hydrometeorological information and systems of automated processing of satellite data.
The second - directly to the basics of visual interpretation of images from meteorological satellites, a review of digital methods and technologies to improve the visual interpretation of digital satellite images, the main directions of practical use of the results of meteorological interpretation of satellite images in synoptic analysis.
The third is the restoration of meteorological parameters of the atmosphere and the underlying surface using multispectral satellite data and the practical use of these data in climatological, agrometeorological and hydrological studies.

Assessment methods and criteria
The control is carried out according to the module-rating system. The maximum score is 100 points, 60 of which a student can gain during semester control and 40 points - at the test (5th semester) and exam (6th semester).
The content module 1 (CM1) includes topics 1-2, the content module 2 (CM2) - topics 3-4, the content module 3 (CM3) - topic 5. The exam requires knowledge of the basic methods of restoring meteorological parameters from satellite data, decoding satellite images and the use of satellite data in numerical models of weather forecasting, climatology, agrometeorology and hydrology.
