Learning outcomes
The result of the course is the acquisition of a basic theoretical and practical understanding of oil and gas geochemistry. Students gain knowledge about the composition of oil, gas, natural-gas condensate, gas hydrates. They master the basic modern methods and techniques of geochemical research in regional exploration and hydrocarbon production. Students observe the application of geochemical methods in the construction and operation of underground gas storage facilities and the search for gas hydrates in the waters. They also learn to establish the basic geochemical parameters for determining the composition and thermal maturation of kerogen, direction and distance of hydrocarbons migration. Students learn to interpret and summarize the results of geochemical data. Therefore, they can determine the sequence and priority of geochemical research at different stages of exploration using modern equipment and computer technology.
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
To have knowledge of chemistry, physics, mathematics (non-specialized level), petroleum geology, lithology, petrography of reservoir rocks. To have basic skills in working with a PC.
Course content
The discipline includes the main topics such as: - chemical composition and physical properties of oil, gas, natural-gas condensate, gas hydrate in different physicochemical and thermodynamic conditions of the natural environment. Their processing, storage and transportation; - organic matter, its composition, conditions of accumulation and conversion into hydrocarbons; - primary and secondary migration; - patterns of accumulation of hydrocarbons in traps; - modern hypotheses of a hydrocarbon formation and their argumentation; - classification and types of organic matter (kerogen), methods of research of its maturity and chemical composition; - epigenetic (diagenetic) transformations of oil; - methods of geochemical research;  geochemical methods in the construction and operation of underground gas storage facilities.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures, seminars, laboratory, practical classes, consultations, independent study
Assessment methods and criteria
The control of the learning process is carried out according to the modular rating system. It involves practical work, oral examination during seminars, where students must demonstrate the level of acquired knowledge on a particular topic, and two written modular tests. The final assessment is conducted by an exam.
