Learning outcomes
Fundamentals of crystal optics during investigation in transmitted polarized light as well as practical skills of work with polarized microscopes and diagnosing rocks and minerals in thin sections will be provided.
Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students have to take a course of "Mineralogy with the basics of crystallography", "Basic of petrography", and "Basic of lithology". Ability to analyze and think logically.
Course content
Methods and tools of microscopic study of rocks and their minerals in polarized light are considered. The use of polarized light (petrographic studies) remains the main and the most common method of diagnosis of rocks of different genesis and their rock-forming minerals. The discipline is designed in such a way that covers both theoretical issues of crystal optics and gives initial practical skills for petrographic research and optical constants' identification of the studied minerals.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Lectures and laboratory classes, independent work of the student
Assessment methods and criteria
The control is carried out according to the modular rating system and involves 8 practical works (where students must demonstrate the quality of acquired knowledge and solve problems using the methods and tools outlined by a lecturer) and 2 written tests. During the semester, a student can receive a maximum of 60 (minimum 36) rating points. The final quiz is conducted as an exam, where the maximum score is 40 points and the marginal score - 24 points.
