Prerequisites and co-requisites
The student must successfully master the following subjects: "Practical course of English (1st semester)", "Theoretical course of English: part 1" and know the basic linguistic concepts; have basic skills in the selection, analysis and interpretation of linguistic facts. 
Course content
The course provides a comprehensive study of the features of all levels of English at different stages of its development; demonstrates the process of its transformation from inflectional to more of an analytical language. The discipline consists of lectures, seminars and self-study. Thematically, the course covers Old English, Middle English and Early New English periods; all the linguistic hallmarks and milestones in the development of the English language and linguistic transformations typical of respective periods

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Forms of study consist of lectures, seminars and self-study, which aims to help students prepare for practical classes. Teaching methods include answers at the seminars, research tasks carried out in the process of self-study, written linguistic analyses of texts of different types, and the test that consists of two tasks: a theoretical question on the history of language of general nature; practical analysis of the text.
Assessment methods and criteria
Seminar answers constitute a maximum of 20 points and 15 minimum. Research tasks constitute a maximum of 25 points and 16 minimum. Written linguistic analyses of texts of various types constitute 15 points maximum and 9 minimum. The maximum points on the test is 40, minimum - 24. The final grade, which is formed as the sum of all points gained during the semester according to all forms of activities and does not require any additional forms of evaluation, constitutes a maximum of 100 points, minimum 60. Grade matching scale: Passed / Passed 60-100, Failed / Fail 0-59.
