Prerequisites and co-requisites
The content and objectives of the course require students to have basic theoretical knowledge of the history of Ukrainian and Foreign literature which they acquired in secondary schools.
Course content
The aim of the course is to give the students the basic knowledge and skills in contemporary literary analysis. Recent practice of shortening of the literary courses at a secondary school results in the lowering of the students’ competence in the theoretical component of literary studies. The tasks of the course are to enlarge the competence of freshmen and to better their skills in contemporary literary analysis, to help them acquire the new knowledge for the further courses in literary history at the university level. The successful work of an applicant to the educational program “Bachelor of Philology” fully depends on the level of the philological education received at school as well as at the introductory stage of the literary studies in this program.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
Меthods of teaching: lecture, seminar, control test, self-study on the course. At classes of the lecture part the elements of research are introduced to give the students a chance to classify different kinds of literary criticism and samples of the texts based on the critical approaches of the 19th-20th cc. Seminars are held according to the plans distributed beforehand. Module test papers provide for variants with individual assignments. Monitoring of systematic self-study on the topics of the course is held in the form of quick oral questioning during the class.
Assessment methods and criteria
Final score for the course constitutes a total of points for all forms of control and does not need any additional forms of evaluation.
Forms of the current control include the sum of marks for answers at the seminars (max 40/min 24 points) and for 2 written Module test papers:
–Module 1 test paper’s score – max 25/ min 16 points;
–Module 2 test paper’s score – max 35 /min 20 points.
Students who did not manage to score 60 points during the term have to work for the classes and topics they missed.
