Form of study
Full-time form
Prerequisites and co-requisites
Students have to know the basic principles of physics, mathematics, crystal chemistry, quantum, and physical chemistry, be able to apply knowledge of physical and quantum chemistry to analyze and describe the electronic structure and properties of crystal bodies, have basic skills of differential and integral calculus.
Course content
The physical principles of structure and properties of solid matters are considered depending on the chemical bonds and electronic structure of atoms. Classification of solid matters, nature of interatomic forces, types of model interatomic potentials and their application to calculate equilibrium properties of inert gases and ionic crystals. The metal bond, the Drude model of electrical conduction, the quantum theory of the free electron, the Sommerfeld model, the Pauli principle in the formation of the energy spectrum of electrons, the calculation of the properties of electrons using the Fermi-Dirac statistics, the electron heat capacity and paramagnetism of metals, the basic principles of band theory. The properties of crystalline bodies and their practical application are discussed
