Form of study
Prerequisites and co-requisites
To succeed, the course requires knowledge of English at the level not lower than B2 of CEFR. In addition, students are supposed to know theoretical foundations of basic historical and literary disciplines, basic methods of literary analysis, basic literary terminology for each literary direction; to be able to use basic terms and notions of literary studies., and to have skills in literary analysis
Course content
The discipline is part of the complex discipline “Methods of Teaching and Learning English Philology”. The students are acquainted with the main theoretical and methodological parameters of the formation of the “English literature course; modern methodical forms of teaching English literature in the context of active (contextual) learning in a modern institution of higher education and methods of creating a heuristic situation as a stimulus for active learning in various forms of lecture and seminar work. The students learn to assess the conformity of the methodological development of the English Literature course as a separate part to the modern requirements of humanities; design individual topics in the form of a lecture or seminar in accordance with the requirements of active learning.

Planned learning activities and teaching methods
The modes of the course delivery encompass lectures, seminars and self-study, which presuppose such activities as oral answers to the questions/discussions, module presentations, and self-study assignments. The teaching methods include explanations, illustrations, heuristics and research, as well as active methods, which help engage students in the educational process and unlock their scientific and creative potential.
Assessment methods and criteria
The form of summative assessment is an exam. The number of points for the exam is 24–40 (pass), the minimum that is added to the points for summative assessment. Students are admitted to the exam if they earn 36–60 points during formative assessment throughout the entire semester. The exam includes two tasks (see § 7 of the Syllabus).
